The 12 Best Places to Stay in Santorini!

BEST PLACES TO STAY IN SANTORINI

Looking for the best places to stay in Santorini, Greece? I’ve got you covered!

Santorini’s picturesque landscape and rich cultural heritage are the perfect backdrop for the holiday of a lifetime. Even as a seasoned traveller, my Uni trip to Santorini was one of the most incredible trips I’ve been on, and a pic of the turquoise waters still graces my hallway!

My friends and I had a great time, but before we left, choosing where to stay wasn’t easy. There were many factors to consider, especially since things can be on the more expensive side of the gorgeous island.

Santorini is an island which literally fell into the sea during one of the many volcanic explosions it suffered over the centuries. This left one side of the island with colourful volcanic beaches, and the other with a steep cliff which drops off into the abyss of the caldera.

Several white-washed villages were built up on the cliff providing visitors with awe-inspiring views of the volcano and the stunning cliffs.

We opted to spend a bit more on traditional cave-style rooms with a view up on the cliffs in Fira and didn’t regret our decision! The area was full of character and conveniently located in the heart of Santorini’s capital.

We loved how the village was very central, and brimming with restaurants offering Greek delicacies as well as plenty of shopping opportunities.

And then there was the scenery – the clifftop views of the caldera framed by an incredible sunset were just out of this world!

Read on for more options of where to stay that complement your travel preferences.

Planning a Trip to Santorini? Here’s what you need to know!

Moving onto the commonly asked questions about travelling to Santorini!

Where is Santorini?

Santorini is that drop-dead gorgeous gem nestled in the embrace of the Aegean Sea, a Greek island that’s practically flaunting its stunning beauty.

Picture this: sugar-cube buildings with dazzling blue domes perched on cliffs that overlook crystal-clear waters that could give the sky a run for its money.

Yup, you guessed it, it’s in the Mediterranean, south of Greece’s mainland.

So, if you’re dreaming of sipping wine while watching those legendary sunsets paint the sky, Santorini’s the place to be!

Is it best to stay in Oia or Fira?

Ah, the age-old debate: Oia or Fira? Well, it really depends on what kind of traveller you are.

If you’re all about those jaw-dropping sunsets then Oia is your soulmate. Those iconic blue-domed churches against the backdrop of the sinking sun? Pure magic.

But if you’re more of a bustling town lover, craving that lively energy, Fira might be your jam. It’s got the vibrant streets, the restaurants, the shops, and all that urban charm. Plus, the views are nothing to scoff at either.

So, do you fancy romantic serenity with a side of sunset-induced awe (Oia), or are you ready to dive into a whirlwind of activities and vibrant vibes (Fira)?

Either way, Santorini’s got you covered with its Aegean embrace.

How many days is enough to stay in Santorini?

The ideal number of days to spend in Santorini really depends on how deep you want to dive into this Mediterranean paradise.

If you’re aiming for a taste of its beauty without feeling rushed, I’d say a magical 3 to 4 days should do the trick. This allows you to leisurely explore the iconic towns, catch those breathtaking sunsets, indulge in delicious Greek cuisine, and even take a dip and snorkel the gorgeous turquoise waters.

But, if you’re the kind of traveller who craves the full Santorini experience – from beach hopping to wine tasting, and perhaps a sailing adventure around the caldera – then extending your stay to a week might just be the answer.

It’s all about finding that sweet spot between getting your fill of Santorini’s wonders and leaving with a yearning for more.

So, whether you’re a short-and-sweet adventurer or a lingering explorer, Santorini is ready to welcome you with open arms and endless charm.

How to get to Santorini?

the most common way to get to Santorini is by air – hop on a flight from Athens or other major European cities to Santorini’s Thira Airport.

Make sure to grab a window seat, the descent as the plane approaches reveals those iconic cliffs and that mesmerizing caldera.

If you’re feeling a bit more adventurous, you can also opt for a ferry ride. Depart from Athens’ Piraeus port and sail away to Santorini’s Athinios port.

Sure, it takes longer, but it is the more budget-friendly option.

Once you’ve landed in Santorini, taxis, buses, and rental cars await to whisk you to your chosen destination.

It’s all part of the adventure!

So, whether you’re soaring on wings of steel or sailing the waves like a modern-day Odysseus, Santorini’s charms will be there to greet you with open arms.

How to get around Santorini?

There are a few options to choose from when it comes to getting around Santorini.

If you’re up for mingling with the locals and soaking in the laid-back vibe, the local buses are your trusty companions. They link the major towns and attractions, offering a budget-friendly way to get around.

Santorini’s towns are super walkable. Stroll through narrow alleys, discover hidden cafes, and embrace the postcard-perfect scenes at every turn.

But if you’re feeling more independent and want to chase the island’s beauty at your own pace, renting a scooter, ATV, or a car might be the way to go. Wind through the charming streets, find hidden gems, and chase those breathtaking viewpoints.

But wait, there’s more! For an unforgettable aquatic adventure, consider a boat tour or even renting a kayak to explore the coastline from a whole new angle.

Personally, I stuck to primarily walking and also experienced catching the bus from Fira to Oia and it was a very easy and well-organised experience!

Taxis are your best bet for getting to and from your accommodation. Just a word of warning, the roads are pretty chaotic and the road rules are more loosely followed.

Can you drink tap water in Santorini?

Ah, the eternal question of tap water. In Santorini, while the tap water is generally safe for brushing your teeth most locals and tourists stick with bottled water for drinking.

The local water supply, while safe for other uses, is not recommended for drinking.

The water here might have a slightly different taste compared to what you’re used to, owing to the desalination process used to provide water to the island.

Typically, hotels will provide bottled water. There are also plenty of places around town including supermarkets, convenience stores, and gift shops that sell bottled water.

So, when it comes to quenching your thirst, opt for bottled water, which is readily available in stores, restaurants, and cafes.

Hydration, after all, is key to enjoying all the island’s wonders!

Best time to go to Santorini?

If you’re craving that perfect blend of warm weather, lively atmosphere, and fewer crowds, the sweet spot is spring (March – May) and fall (September to November). The temperatures are just right, the beaches are inviting, and you can explore the island without feeling like you’re in a tourist stampede.

Now, if you’re a sun worshipper with a passion for vibrant festivals and a bustling scene, the sizzling summer months of June to August are your jam. Sure, it will be hot, but the energy is palpable, the nightlife is hopping, and the beaches are ready for your sun-soaked dreams.

I visited in June and found the weather surprisingly comfortable! The coastal breeze, particularly at night really takes the edge off the head.

But, if you’re looking to snag some deals and have the island’s charms all to yourself, the quieter winter months can be a hidden gem. While many businesses take a siesta during this time, you’ll get to experience the local life and landscapes in a whole new light.

So, whether you’re a springtime adventurer, a summer sunseeker, or a winter wanderer, Santorini’s beauty is there to welcome you year-round. Just remember to pack your sunscreen – you’re in for a sun-soaked treat!

Some of the best places to stay in Santorini include Fira and Oia
