Most Underrated Dream Destination Holidays

First up, we have the most underrated dream destination holidays, because who doesn’t love an underdog?

1. Rajasthan, India

dream destination holidays guide starting off with India
Rajasthan, India

The first of the dream destination holidays for a cultural experience is Northern India, Rajasthan.  The intensity and range of color in Rajasthan is impossible to ignore. Rajasthan’s big-ticket attractions are its spectacular forts and palaces. Some of the most picturesque attractions to visit include Mehrangarh Fort,  Umaid Bhawan Palace, Amer Fort, City Palace, Jal Mahal, Hawa Mahal, City Palace and Kumbhalgarh Fort, just to name a few.

Rajasthan is known for its array of deserts but it also boasts picturesque lakes. Explore panorama boat tours, such as Lake Pichola, Man Sagar Lake and Pushkar Lake to experience the palaces from afar.

You can’t visit India without visiting its beautiful sanctuaries and national parks to see the diverse wildlife. I recommend visiting Sariska Tiger Reserve in Alwar to see some Royal Bengal Tigers.

To spark some adrenaline, try speed boating in the Fateh Sagar Lake, trekking in Mount Abut, elephant riding in Jaipur or dune bashing in Jaisalmer.

Lastly, venture off the beaten path to Barner town, an authentic city in the Thar desert. Barner is rich in craft including wood carving, pottery, embroidery work, and prints. This area has been spared from mass tourism, walking the streets feels like living in an old Bollywood movie.

Machu Piccu Peru is on the bucket list of many travellers
Rainbow Mountain, Peru

From Machu Picchu to the Amazon, Peru is one of the dream holiday destinations filled with unmissable experiences.

Machu Picchu has loads to offer, it’s no wonder so many are drawn to the heartland of Peru.  You can choose to arrive via a full-on four-day hike along the popular Inca Trail, take the luxury train option from Cusco or explore other trekking options in the surrounding Sacred Valley and Cusco Andes.

Skip the queue and buy your admission ticket ahead of time: Machu Piccu Admission Ticket.

Beyond Machu Piccuh, check out UNESCO World Heritage city Arequipa, noted as the White City due to the abundance of white sandstone buildings.

BEST TIME TO VISIT PERU

7. Croatia

dream destination example
Dubrovnik Croatia

Let’s talk about scenery for a minute.

Croatia is a very strong contender for Europe’s best.

Unreal Adriatic coastlines, sunny beaches, crystal clear water and the literal backdrop of Game of Thrones. Swim in some of the bluest, clearest water you will ever experience.

There are few and far between places where you’ll find a medieval city so well preserved with intact walls. A perfect combination of natural beauty and history.

Visiting Dubrovnik is given, but I also highly recommend checking out Hvar Island, the queen of the Croatian Dalmatian Islands. Considered one of the most beautiful islands in the world. Stroll around the island, relax on the beach and of course, go for a swim in the magnificent water.

The last place in Croatia that is a must-see is Split. Experience a bustling waterfront, ruins dating back to the Roman Empire, and a pumping nightclub scene. On your itinerary should also be a trip to Krka Waterfalls. Jump on the Split to Krka National Park Bus. About a 1h & 15min bus trip and a short ferry across. One of the most beautiful, spectacular natural highlights I’ve ever seen.

BEST TIME TO VISIT CROATIA

During the late spring or early autumn. Croatia’s tourism peak is summertime during July and August when the Adriatic’s warm waters charm countless visitors. There are boat parties, yacht weeks, medieval fairs and free-flowing booze.

8. Tokyo, Japan

Tokyo is a dream destination that is filled with futuristic tech, world class food and fascinating cultural traditions
Tokyo, Japan

The fascinating, fast-paced and intriguing city of Tokyo is an explosion of culture.

Notably, one of the world’s most modern cities in terms of its infrastructure and design. A connected city that is easy to travel around thanks to its superb transportation system.

Enjoy Nature and Art at the Meiji Shrine, see cherry blossoms in bloom when you visit the Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden, and visit the exquisite Sensō-ji Temple, the city’s most famous shrine.

Shop ‘Til You Drop in the Ginza District, considered as iconic as Time Square in New York.

Lined by exclusive shops the Ginza district is also fun to simply wander around or sit in one of its many coffee shops or restaurants while watching the world rush past.

Continue shopping and people-watching in Tokyo’s outrageous Harajuku District.

Pink hair, tattoos, and knee-high boots are only just the starting point here! Defiantly bold styles and outlandish food trends are an experience in themselves.

I’m sure you’ve seen many photos of the next dream destination holiday. Cappadocia, located in central Turkey is well-known for the 100+ hot air balloons that take to its skies almost every morning. The region is also known for its unique fairy chimneys, aka rock formations.

Undoubtedly one of the best things to do in Cappadocia is to ride a hot air balloon, as the sun begins to rise.

Hot air balloons are not the only attraction to explore in Cappadocia. Venture to amazing cave dwellings, hiking trails, restaurants, and more. Why not splurge and treat yourself to an authentic cave hotel in Cappadocia!

Since Cappadocia is central in Turkey, you can go in any direction to continue your exploration. I would recommend either heading from Cappadocia to Pamukkale thermal pools or to Antalya on the coastline.

11. Cinque Terre, Italy

dream holiday destinations for couples include Cinque Terre
Cinque Terre, Italy

One cannot talk about dream destination holidays without mentioning Cinque Terre, Italy. One of, if not the most famous coastal landscapes in the world. The area is now a National Park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, drawing 2.4 million visitors to witness its dramatic cliffs and pretty coastal villages.

Cinque Terre, translated means “five lands”, as the region is made up of 5 fishing villages. Most of the villages are small enough that you can explore them in a day.

If you had to pick only one Cinque Terre village to visit, that will be Vernazza. The narrow alleys, restaurants, the shower by the sea in a cave, just of all of it really!

Next, I would venture to Riomaggiore, considered the more romantic setting for its waterfront setting paired with the pastel buildings and exquisite Italian restaurants. If you’re feeling adventurous try cliff jumping from the left side of the harbour. Prefer something less exhilarating? Stroll the streets with gelato in hand, taking in the architecture and panoramic views.

Manarola is the third must-see village to visit. All the photos you see on Instagram are likely shot here. Walk through the narrow alleys to get to the waterfront.

Take a hike on the coastal loop for the fabulous views and culinary reward waiting at the end, Nessun Dorma, one of Cinque Terre’s finest restaurants. To top it off Manarola is known for its wine, so add a wine tasting experience to your itinerary.

Kho Pha Ngan is well known for the Full Moon Party, a monthly world-famous dance party that draws 20,000 visitors from all over the world.

Let’s talk about food for a minute. Other than the captivating beaches and friendly locals, Thailand is known for its glorious food. Take a stroll through the streets of Old Phuket Town to not only take in the mix of modern art and traditional architecture but to taste the mouth-watering street food. Phuket is especially known for its seafood which you can enjoy without draining your bank account.

Palawan is an island located west of the Philippines that will take your breath away. The capital of the Palawan Province is Puerto Princesa, one of the cleanest cities in the Philippines. Major tourist destinations within Palawan include Coron, famous for its diving and El Nido, famous for its towering cliffs.

Queenstown New Zealand

World-renowned as the adventure hotspot with loads of adrenaline activities on offer, Queenstown should be on all adventure seekers’ travel bucket lists. Queenstown located in the Southern Alps, is an alpine destination offering fun on and off the mountain.

Starting off with the ski fields. Treble Cone Ski Area, 1hr & 30 minutes from Queenstown, is the largest ski area in the South Island, making it a popular field to visit. If you are looking for something closer, Coronet Peak is only a 20-minute drive from downtown.

Coronet Peak has great on-mountain facilities, state-of-the-art snowmaking, and night skiing.

Hang up the skis and slip into some jeans and a sweater to explore Queenstown’s après-ski atmosphere. Stylish bars, clubs, kiwi pubs, and craft beers are second to none.

When in the adventure capital why not go all out and skydive over Lake Wakiapitu or Bungy jump Queenstown’s AJ Hackett Bungy? For something more low-key take the skyline gondola that is 450m high, offering sweeping views of Queenstown.

A visit to the South Island should include a trek to Milford Sound, home to some of the most impressive waterfalls on Earth.

One of the best parts about cruising Milford Sound in winter is the wildlife! Spot Seals, penguins, and dolphins as they enjoy the quieter months without a flock of tourists. I would recommend taking a tour coach to Milford Sound in winter.

Driving to Milford Sound can be more dangerous in the winter due to the risk of avalanches and slippery roads. If you are wanting to drive make sure to check the road status before you leave and have snow chains on hand.

BEST TIME TO VISIT QUEENSTOWN

Venture to Lapland to witness the mind-blowing Northern Lights unobscured, a sight you can’t see all year round! To see the Nothern lights, ensure you are far enough from the city’s light pollution by immersing yourself in Finland’s wilderness and keeping an eye on the forecast for clear skies as clouds will block your view.

Lake Louise is one of the most iconic lakes in all of Canada. If you are visiting from June to August you can expect the lake to be thawed revealing the bright blue water. The perfect time to hit the numerous hiking trails and take loads of beautiful photos.

Take in all of Banff by riding the Banff Gondola. If you’re feeling energetic and the trail is open you instead hike up to the top of the mountain and catch the gondola back down.

Zermatt Switzerland

Next on the list of dream destination holidays is Switzerland! Zermatt is a charming village overlooking the highest peak in Europe, The Matterhorn. Zermatt’s cozy wooden chalets, historic homes and the ever-present towering mountains create a magical charm like no other place.

Zermatt is a haven for expert skiers. Fresh powder, a guaranteed snowfall in December, epic ski-lift views and gorgeous resorts to unwind in.

The après-ski scene (after skiing) or activities beyond the slopes for non-skiers is also some of the best around. Experience mountain excursions, tobogganing, paragliding or enjoy more relaxing outdoor activities such as taking a stroll around the town.

Escape the winter chills by exploring the restaurant scene or immerse yourself in the town’s history at museums.

The spectacular views, winter sports and quaint towns do come at quite an expensive price tag. If you have the budget it’s worth every cent! A trip that won’t disappoint.

BEST TIME TO VISIT ZERMATT

22. Amsterdam, Netherlands

travelling alone as a woman reddit

Amsterdam is a one-of-a-kind city, known for its elaborate canal system.

The city is full of rich history, I highly recommend checking out The Rijksmuseum and the Anne Frank House.

As you stroll along the beautiful canals expect to see loads of cyclists, narrow houses and stunning architecture. Amsterdam truly feels like you’re in a fairy tale.

Rent a bike and join thousands of locals peddling around, it’s certainly the main method of getting around the city.

Another popular spot for locals is “coffee shops”, which is just a normal part of the city’s landscape. And of course, a visit to the popular Dam Square, or the city’s centre, is a must.

BEST TIME TO VISIT AMSTERDAM

April, June, October and November for fewer crowds and decent weather. December to February sees the cheapest prices.

A city that never sleeps, a backdrop of many famous movies and tv shows, and a hub of new innovations and creativity. Unreal shopping, incredible foods from all over the world and a pumping entertainment scene.

Some must-see places in New York City are The top of the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, Times Square, The Friends building (if you’re a huge fan like me!), Central Park & Brooklyn Bridge. Now I could go on, but I think that would need another article!

Get ready for some crazy pinch-yourself moments, it is seriously such a surreal place.

BEST TIME TO VISIT NEW YORK

The best time to see New York, as recommended, by locals is during the fall months of late September through to early November.

25. Seoul, South Korea

Seoul South Korea is a spot everyone should add to their travel bucket list
Seoul, South Korea

Moving over to Seoul, South Korea.

South Korean pop culture has exploded in recent years turning Seoul into one of the hottest destination in Asia.

There are five Joseon Royal Palaces in Seoul. Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung are the biggest and often considered the most beautiful of the five so I would prioritise seeing these over the other 3.

Next up, visit Bukchon Hanok Village to stroll the narrow alleyways and take in the traditional Korean houses called Hanoks. It will take you back in time to Seoul hundreds of years ago!

When it comes to great views, Seoul Tower’s observation deck is the best place to get a bird’s eye view of the city.

Seoul’s markets are worth the trip for tasting authentic street food and shopping like a local.

Markets to consider are Noryangjin Fish Market, Gwangjang Market and Dongdaemun Market.

BEST TIME TO VISIT SEOUL

For dry and mild temperatures is between March and June or September and November.

26. Rome, Italy

Rome is a dream holiday location

Pizza Al Taglio to Stracciatella Gelato. Is anyone else hungry now?!

I’m sure you already have the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, Spanish steps and St Peter’s Square on your itinerary so let’s cover the less well-known sites.

The Sistine Chapel, part of the Vatican Museum complex, is filled with stunning details, iconography and ancient history, making it well worth your time.

Next, explore Trastevere an ancient part of Rome, one of the few places left where you can see authentic Roman life and get a real feel for the city.

You can expect to see washing hanging out between the streets and locals shouting to each other from building to building.

BEST TIME VISIT IN ROME

Well-known for its mega malls, beaches, artificial islands, scorching hot weather and incredible wealth.

The Dubai Mall, the second biggest shopping centre on the planet, is the place to indulge in retail therapy, window shop the luxury brands and visit the in-built attractions.

Get outside and ski in the Dubai desert. Yep that’s right you can ski in the snow in the middle of the Arabian Desert. Dubai’s five-slope indoor ski resort is a great way to escape the heat and experience a new form of skiing! If you’re game, test out the world’s first 400m indoor black run.

Dubai’s greatest drawcard has to be its incredible beaches. Beijing in the middle of the desert has the upside of 300 days of sunshine per year! And to top it off you don’t have to travel far away to reach the long-spanning coastline.

The next well-known attraction to see in Dubai is the Palm Fountain which aims to show the harmony between the universe and the Earth. A colourful display incorporating lights, dancing water and music.

As we know Dubai is all about luxury and living a life of abundance and fun.

Palm Jumeirah fits this bill being one of the world’s largest artificial islands. Take a trip to the islands and see the multi-million dollar mansions and five-star luxury hotels, including Atlantis.

BEST TIME TO VISIT DUBAI
