Gold coast vs Sunshine coast, where should you visit?

What is The Gold Coast Known For

Alright, listen up! The Gold Coast is a buzzing beachside city that’s got a whole lot to offer. From riding the waves to dancing the night away, there’s something for everyone here.

Surfers Paradise is where the surf culture and party scene collide, so get ready for some wild nights.

When I think of the Gold Coast, I instantly remember attending schoolies, an Aussie tradition when high school graduates gather at the Gold Coast to party and celebrate surviving 12 years of schooling.

Plus I have had some pretty wild nights at the coast during my University years. Including hitting the clubs to dance the night away followed by waking up to hit the beach to curb the hangovers.

And just quickly to touch on the waves, the Gold Coast has some of the gnarliest in the world. Of course, make sure to be safe and stick to swimming in between the flags.

But hold on, there’s more. Skyscrapers? Yup, they’re here too, bringing together city life and beachside vibes into the mix.

Now, don’t be fooled. If you’re craving nature, the lush hinterlands are just a quick hop away, offering a refreshing change of pace. The Gold Coast hinterland is home to some wonderful wineries, perfect for a romantic getaway.

And let’s not forget the adrenaline junkies – the Gold Coast is home to Queensland’s favourite theme parks like Dreamworld and Warner Bros. Movie World, where you can satisfy your need for speed and thrills.

So, to sum it up, the Gold Coast is like an action-packed adventure with a dash of glam. It is the ultimate destination for anyone seeking an unforgettable time both on and off the beach.

Comparing Gold Coast Vs Sunshine coast, the Sunshine coast is much more laid back and relaxing

What is The Sunshine Coast Known For

The Sunshine Coast is all about laid-back coastal charm and natural beauty that’ll leave you in awe.

This slice of paradise is renowned for its stunning beaches, pristine waterways, and a relaxed atmosphere that’s second to none.

Whether you’re looking to catch some rays on golden sands, explore charming coastal towns like Noosa and Mooloolaba, or dive into the romantic hinterlands with its breathtaking landscapes, the Sunshine Coast has got it all.

Beyond the beach, you can discover local markets, indulge in farm-to-table dining, and head out on adventures like hiking, kayaking, and wildlife encounters.

The Sunshine Coast is my favourite place which is close to home (Brisbane) to escape the hustle and bustle and experience the slower pace of life. It’s perfect for family getaways, romantic weekends or trips away with your besties.

With a perfect blend of relaxation and exploration, the Sunshine Coast is a haven for those seeking a getaway that’s as rejuvenating as it is captivating.

Gold Coast Vs Sunshine Coast: The Beaches

Moving onto the battle of the beaches to compare Gold Coast Vs Sunshine Coast.

gold coast beaches can be crowded during peak season

Gold Coast Beaches

The Gold Coast’s beaches are a sun-soaked paradise that captures the essence of coastal living.

From the iconic Surfers Paradise to the serene Burleigh Heads, the vibrant Main Beach to the hidden gem of Tallebudgera, these sandy stretches offer something for everyone.

Whether you’re seeking bustling beachside energy, family-friendly shores, or secluded spots to unwind, the Gold Coast has it all.

The crystal-clear waters are perfect for swimming and water sports, while the golden sands invite sunbaking, picnics and even a little beachside volleyball.

The popularity of Gold Coast beaches can however lead to big crows, especially during peak tourist seasons, which does take away the relaxing nature of hitting the beach.

It’s also important to note, some beaches on the Gold Coast can experience strong currents and rips, which can be very dangerous for swimmers. Make sure to always swim between the red and yellow flags and if in doubt don’t go further than knee depth.

With a backdrop of towering skyscrapers and further development on its way, this cityscape can sometimes overshadow the beauty of the coastline.

My favourite beaches on the Gold Coast:

  • Burleigh Heads
  • Broadbeach
  • Main Beach
  • Tallebudgera Creek
  • Surfers Paradise

Sunshine Coast beaches are some of Queenslands best beaches

Sunshine Coast Beaches

Next up, let’s unpack the Sunshine Coast beaches on offer.

The Sunshine Coast’s beaches truly offer the perfect escape into natural beauty and coastal tranquillity.

From the calm waters of Caloundra, consistent surf-breaks of Coolumn, and uncrowded shores of Marcoola, to the upscale trendy vibes of Noosa Heads, each beach is something special.

The Sunshine Coast boasts an inviting blend of laid-back atmosphere and breathtaking scenery, perfect for long walks on the beach or unwinding under the sun.

Crystal-clear waters are perfect for swimming and water sports, while the surrounding coastal landscapes provide a stunning backdrop for cracking open a good book of an afternoon.

Whether you’re exploring hidden coves, enjoying beachfront cafes, or simply soaking in the serenity, the beaches of the Sunshine Coast offer an authentic coastal experience.

But it’s not all sunshine and rainbows and the Sunny Coast. During certain months, stingers can appear in the waters and on the sand. I can remember a few times when Blue bottles covered the shores of the beaches. And trust me, getting stung by an Aussie stinger is not fun.

Like any coastal area, there can be potential risks swimming on beaches including strong currents, rips, and marine creatures, so it’s essential to follow guidance from the lifeguards on duty.

While less crowded compared to the Gold Coast, popular beaches can still become quite busy during peak tourist seasons.

My favourite beaches on The Sunshine Coast:

  • Noosa Main Beach
  • Mooloolaba Beach
  • Kings Beach Caloundra
  • Rainbow Beach
  • Mudjimba Beach

The Verdict: Beaches

Sunshine Coast or Gold Coast: Hotels & Resorts

Moving onto comparing the Sunshine Coast or Gold Coast best places to stay.

In comparing Gold coast vs Sunshine Coast accommodation, gold coast is home to bigger resorts and more options

Gold Coast Hotels & Resorts

The Gold Coast offers a diverse range of hotels and resorts, so you’re bound to find something you’ll love.

From iconic beachfront skyscrapers to luxurious spa retreats and family-friendly resorts, the accommodation options are as vibrant as the city itself.

There are a few hostels for budget travellers which I have personally stayed at and were very accommodating, affordable and loads of fun. I have also stayed in the iconic Mantras scattered throughout the Goldie which provide a central location, comfortable rooms and great pools.

However, while the choices are abundant, you encounter challenges such as higher prices during peak tourist seasons (and yes Australia can be expensive), low availability and potential crowds in popular areas. Additionally, I have found parking to be a bit of a nightmare at hotels.

If your accommodation doesn’t come with parking, expect to have to pay for street parking and frequently move your car.

Despite these potential drawbacks, the Gold Coast’s accommodation scene ensures that travellers can find themselves indulging in lavish relaxation, immersing in urban energy, or enjoying laid-back beachside living, all within the comfort of their chosen hotel or resort.

Below are my recommended stays.

Mantra Crown Towers

Perfect for families and friends alike, this resort has a tropical pool area with waterslides, spacious apartments, and a central location.

Q1 Resort and Spa

Iconic for its striking architecture, this resort offers luxurious apartments with stunning ocean views. It features an observation deck, spa, and pools.

BUNK Surfers Paradise

Located in the heart of Surfers Paradise, this lively hostel offers a fun and social atmosphere. With dormitory-style rooms and a range of facilities, it’s perfect for backpackers looking to make new friends.

Sunshine Coast Twin Waters Resort is one of Queensland's best resorts

Sunshine Coast Hotels & Resorts

The Sunny Coast is home to a diverse range of hotels and resorts, providing an inviting escape for travellers seeking a blend of coastal beauty and relaxation.

From budget hotels, and charming boutique accommodations to upscale beachfront resorts, the options cater to everyone.

I have stayed at mid-range hotels, AirBnBs and luxury resorts and have only ever had wonderful experiences. When choosing a place to stay, the closer you are to the beach the more you can expect to pay.

But if you have a tight budget, a car and don’t mind skipping on the beach views, I recommend staying a few streets back from the beach to save some serious cash.

Choosing your location on the Sunny Coast can also impact how much you’ll pay and the value you’ll receive. For example, expect to pay top dollar at the popular Noosa Heads, whereas you are more likely to find greater value in opting for Alexandra Heads or Caloundra.

But here’s the catch, it’s important to note that during peak holiday periods, prices might be higher, and it can be difficult to find places that are available on your desired dates.

Below are my top recommended stays.

Novotel Twin Waters Resort (My personal favourite)

Located on a private beach and offers a range of activities including water sports, golf, and spa treatments. Twin Waters is my go-to on trips to the Sunny Coast!

➡️ Click here to book your stay at Novotel Twin Waters

Bounce Noosa

Located in Noosaville, Bounce Noosa Hostel provides affordable accommodations featuring an outdoor swimming pool, private parking, a bar, and a communal lounge area.

➡️ Click here to book your stay at Bounce Noosa Hostels

Ocean Views Resort

This resort is situated near Moffat Beach and offers ocean-view apartments and is known for its quiet and relaxed atmosphere.

The Verdict: Hotels & Resorts

⭐ Sunshine Coast

Sunshine Coast Vs Gold Coast: Nightlife

Next up we are going to compare Gold Coast Vs Sunshine Coast nightlife scene.

Gold coast is known for it's vibrant nightlife and epic beach bars

Gold Coast Nightlife

Gold Coast nightlife is known for its vibrant and dynamic atmosphere, attracting both locals and tourists seeking an energetic night out to remember.

With an array of bars, clubs, and entertainment venues, the city comes alive after dark.

The iconic Surfers Paradise area is a hub for nightlife, offering a diverse range of options from beachfront bars with live music to stylish nightclubs hosting top DJs.

The nightlife scene provides an opportunity to dance the night away, socialize with other travellers, and enjoy a variety of cocktails and cuisine.

Some of my favourite clubs for dancing with friends include the classing Retros, Cocktails Nightclub and the funky Lost Kingdom. Prepare for them to be jam-packed, the music to be pumping and the drinks flowing!

However, it’s important to note that the bustling nightlife can sometimes lead to issues such as noise complaints, and overcrowding, and if you’re there for a relaxing getaway, the nightlife scene could be a drawback.

Make sure to be careful when heading out to experience Gold Coast’s nightlife. Watch your drinks, look out for your friends, and make a plan to get home safely such as calling an Uber or a friend.

Best Nightclubs on the Gold Coast:

  • Lost Kingdom Nightclub
  • Asylum Nightclub
  • Cocktails Nightclub
  • Sin City
  • Elsewhere Bar

Sunshine Coast nightlife is much more laid back in comparison to the Gold Coast

Sunshine Coast Nightlife

The Sunshine Coast boasts a much more laid-back nightlife when compared to the Goldie, with a focus on relaxed socializing and entertainment.

While the Sunny Coast isn’t renowned for its nightlife it still offers a selection of nightclubs and plenty of trendy bars.

These venues often feature live music, themed parties, and a variety of drinks to enjoy in a relaxed coastal atmosphere.

The nightclub scene on the Sunshine Coast tends to lean towards a more intimate experience, perfect for hanging with friends.

It’s worth noting that the nightlife options are much more limited compared to bigger cities and some venues do face challenges related to transport and varying opening hours.

It’s recommended to plan ahead and research the available options to get to and from the venue to ensure a memorable and safe night out on the Sunshine Coast.

Best Nightclubs Sunshine Coast:

  • Upstairs Nightclub
  • Mixology
  • Sol Bar

The Verdict: Nightlife
