Getting There from Seoul

So, you’re ready to explore South Korea beyond Seoul? Well, you’ve got two awesome options: Busan or Jeju Island. Let’s talk about how to get there.

First up, Busan. Getting to Busan from Seoul is a breeze. You can hop on the KTX bullet train from Seoul, and in just over two and a half hours, you’ll be soaking up the sun on Busan’s beaches. This is what I did and it was super convenient and affordable.

If you prefer flying or are arriving from somewhere other than Seoul, Gimhae International Airport has got you covered.

Now, onto Jeju Island. Getting to this paradise is a bit different. You’ll likely need to catch a flight from either Gimpo or Incheon International Airport.

Or, for a more scenic route, take a ferry from the mainland. But this will take a tad longer, I’m talking anywhere from 3-5 to 11 hours.

In Busan, you’ve got a ton of options. Whether you’re a beach bum, history geek or foodie, you won’t be bored.

Getting around Busan is a piece of cake thanks to its awesome public transport system. Even I found it easy and I can be a tad geographically challenged when it comes to public transport! Hop on a bus or the subway, or just flag down a taxi (they are pretty affordable).

Although, Busan isn’t the most walkable city as it is quite spread out, so getting around on foot to each of the top attractions isn’t really an option.

As for Jeju Island, transport is a bit more varied and can be a little messier. Renting a car is the best option and gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace, but if you’re not comfortable behind the wheel or don’t have the funds, don’t worry!

Jeju has a solid bus network but no metro. Just be prepared to spend a little more time getting around if you stick to public transport. But hey, if all else fails, there are always taxis!

Food

Let’s talk about food. In Busan, it’s all about the seafood. Seriously, you’re in for an experience tasting steamed live octopus at Jagalchi Fish Market. And then there’s dwaeji-gukbap (pork soup with rice) – it’s to die for!

Over on Jeju Island, you’re in for a treat. Literally. Black pork is the name of the game here, and you’ll find it in everything from barbecue to hot pot. And of course, you can’t visit Jeju without trying some fresh seafood. From haemul pajeon (seafood pancake) to grilled abalone, you’re going to eat well here.

I found finding a place to crash in Busan an easy and surprisingly affordable process. The city offers a wide range of accommodation options to suit every budget and preference.

Plus, getting around the city is cheap thanks to its public transport.

Jeju Island, on the other hand, can be a bit pricier, especially during peak tourist season. Accommodation rates tend to be higher, especially for beachfront resorts and luxury hotels. Dining out can also be more expensive, although you’ll still find plenty of affordable options if you know where to look.

That said, the cost of transport can add up fast, especially if you’re relying on taxis or rental cars to get around the island. But hey, with all the natural beauty and unique experiences Jeju has to offer, it’s totally worth splurging a little!

When’s the best time to visit Busan? Well, that depends on what you’re looking for.

If you’re itching to hit the beach, the summer months of June to August are ideal, with warm weather and plenty of sunshine, perfect for swimming. Plus, you can catch some epic beach festivals and events, like the Haeundae Sand Festival and the Busan Sea Festival.

Spring and autumn (when I visited) are also great times to visit, with mild temperatures and fewer crowds, perfect for exploring all the other key attractions. And if you’re visiting Busan in winter there is still plenty to do with its festive atmosphere.

As for Jeju Island, autumn is undoubtedly the best season. It’s perfect for hiking and lounging by the beach.

Whilst you may think Spring is also a great time, the air quality is notoriously bad.

If you’re into hiking, consider winter, with fewer crowds and the chance to see snow-capped mountains and icy waterfalls.
