Port Vila offers a range of excellent tours which makes seeing the sites a breeze

Top Things To Do in Port Vila Vanuatu

Vanuatu was a destination I had always dreamed of visiting. From stunning waterfalls to underwater wonders, Port Vila, the capital and largest city of Vanuatu, had much to offer.

It was tricky to narrow down, but these are my top 8 things to do in Port Vila.

Discover the Mele Cascades

The Mele Cascades are a series of stunning waterfalls in a rainforest. A visit here offers you the chance to hike through Vanuatu’s pristine nature, swim in crystal-clear pools, and bask in the refreshing mist of the falls.

The entrance fee when I visited was 2,000 vatu ($25 AUD)per person. This is one of the most expensive entry fees in Vanuatu so I would recommend skipping if you’re on a tight budget.

Dive into the Blue Hole

The Blue Hole is an incredible natural wonder, it’s no wonder it’s on the top of travellers’ bucket lists. It’s a breathtaking bright blue lagoon surrounded by lush vegetation and offers excellent snorkelling opportunities.

Remember to bring cash, it’s 500 vatu ($6 AUD) for adults, and 300 vatu for kids, so be sure to bring some coins with you to pay the entry fee.

Explore Port Vila Markets

For a taste of local culture, head to the Port Vila Markets. Here, you can sample fresh tropical fruits, indulge in local cuisine, and shop for handmade crafts, clothing, and souvenirs. I found it to be a bustling place that provides a glimpse into the daily life of the Vanuatu people.

Visit the Ekasup Cultural Village

Immerse yourself in the rich cultural heritage of Vanuatu by visiting the Ekasup Cultural Village. Local guides will take you on a journey through traditional village life, where you’ll learn about customs, rituals, and artistry, including traditional dance performances.

Enjoy a Day at Hideaway Island

Just a short boat ride from Port Vila, Hideaway Island is a gorgeous marine sanctuary offering some of the best snorkelling and diving experiences in the South Pacific. Explore the underwater post office, where you can send a waterproof postcard (yes you read the right) and relax on the pristine beaches.

Going on a Buggy Tour

An exhilarating buggy tour of Port Vila is one of the most fun things you can do. Explore off-the-beaten-path areas that are inaccessible by other means. Ride your buggy through forests and along scenic coastlines, it’s a thrilling adventure!

Discover the History at the National Museum of Vanuatu

To learn more about Vanuatu’s history and culture, a visit to the National Museum is a must. The museum showcases a great collection of artifacts, including traditional art, tools, and ceremonial objects, providing valuable insights into the country’s past.

Where to Stay in Port Vila

These are my recommended stays in Port Vila.

I loved my stay at Breakas beach resort, it was a beautiful beachfront resort with wonderful bungalows.

BREAKAS BEACH RESORT

I loved my stay at Breakas beach resort, it was a beautiful beachfront resort with wonderful bungalows.

Breakas is located just south of Port Vila on a 500m private beach. It’s a short drive to shops and restaurants although you won’t really need to leave the resort as it has it all.

Free breaky is included plus there is a range of delicious Italian options for lunch and dinner.

The resort also offers daily activities including cooking classes, live music, fire dancing, and more.

You don’t need to go far to access some great snorkeling at Breakas. I spent the day exploring the reef located on the private beach and it was magical.

Garden View Bungalow cost around $262 AUD and include free breakfast.

Melanesian hotel is a great value stay in Port Vila

MELANESIAN HOTEL

I unexpectly stayed at the Melanisian Hotel as my flight was delayed by a day and I needed a nights accommodation.

I opted for the Melanisian hotel as it is affordable yet very comfortable. Plus it has air conditioning and a pool which is essential in the Vanuatu heat!

Buffet breaky is included which is a great spread of pastries, toasts, cereal, juices and fruit.

For Vanuatu the Wi-Fi was decent and the rooms come equipped with a tv which is great to pop on as you fall asleep in the comfy beds.

It’s a short walk to get into the heart of Port Vila’s city including the Port Vila markets which are a must for exploring.

Overall, I loved my stay at the Melanisian Hotel and would recommend you check it out.

Exploring the streets of Port Vila in Vanuatu on a day tour

FAQs: Best Port Vila Tours & Things to Do

Moving onto some commonly asked questions about the best Port Vila tours and things to do.

What to do in Port Vila in one day?

In one day in Port Vila, you can tick off quite a few attractions that showcase the best of this tropical paradise.

Start your morning with a visit to the Port Vila Markets, where you can immerse yourself in the local culture, sample fresh tropical fruits, and shop for unique handicrafts.

From there, head to the incredible Blue Lagoon to swim in the gorgeous bright blue waters. Visiting a blue hole in Vanuatu is one of the most incredible experiences and although the Blue Lagoon isn’t as incredible as the blue holes in Espiritu Santo it is still well worth the visit.

Alternatively, you can head west of Port Vila to Mele Cascades, a waterfall just a short drive from the city. Here, you can take a refreshing dip in the crystal-clear pools and hike the nature trails.

Afterwards, fuel up with a delicious seafood lunch at one of the waterfront restaurants along Port Vila Harbor.

In the afternoon, explore the rich history and culture of Vanuatu at the Vanuatu Cultural Centre and the National Museum. Finally, wind down your day with a relaxing sunset cruise around the harbour, enjoying the breathtaking views and maybe even a traditional kava ceremony.

This is just one of the many itineraries you can craft, I also highly recommend a day trip to Hideaway Island for snorkelling or diving.

Getting around Vanuatu isn’t the easiest, so I highly recommend you join a guided tour or rent a car.

How many days do you need in Vanuatu?

For a basic introduction to the main attractions of Port Vila and a couple of nearby excursions, a stay of 3 to 4 days is sufficient.

However, to truly appreciate the diverse beauty and culture of Vanuatu and to explore multiple islands such as Efate, Tanna, Espiritu Santo, or the more remote outer islands, a stay of at least 7 to 10 days is recommended.

This allows you to organize a variety of activities, from volcano hikes and diving adventures to cultural encounters with local communities.

I booked a 7-day trip to Vanuatu which was great on paper however I ran into quite a few flight cancellations and delays on AirVanuatu which is apparently pretty common.

My advice, factor in extra time for travel delays and things going wrong. Vanuatu is quite slow-paced and they are quite behind the times so don’t expect the same level of service as you receive in Western countries you visit.

Can cruise ships go to Port Vila?

Yes, cruise ships can visit Port Vila, which is a popular stop on many cruise itineraries in the South Pacific.

Port Vila, the capital of Vanuatu, has a well-equipped cruise port that can accommodate various cruise ships of different sizes.

Cruise passengers arriving in Port Vila have the opportunity to explore the city’s attractions, go on tours and excursions to nearby natural wonders like Mele Cascades and Hideaway Island, and experience the local culture and cuisine.

The city offers a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere to cruise visitors, making it a great destination for those exploring the beautiful islands of Vanuatu.

How long does it take to drive around Port Vila?

Driving around Port Vila itself doesn’t take very long, as the city is relatively small and compact.

It typically takes around 3 hours to drive around Port Vila, depending on the specific route you take.

The main road that encircles the city is the Ring Road, and it provides access to most of the city’s attractions and accommodations.

If you plan to explore the surrounding areas or visit natural attractions like Mele Cascades or the Blue Lagoon, you should budget additional time for those trips, as they usually require longer drives.

How do I get to the Blue Lagoon in Vanuatu?

To get to the Blue Lagoon in Vanuatu, you’ll typically need to travel to Efate Island, where the Blue Lagoon is located.

Most travellers to Vanuatu arrive at Bauerfield International Airport in Port Vila, the capital city of Vanuatu, on Efate Island.

From Port Vila, head to the Blue Lagoon by one of the following options:

Guided Tours

Many tour operators in Port Vila offer guided day trips to the Blue Lagoon. These tours often include transport, lunch and opportunities for snorkelling and swimming.

Rental Car

Renting a car is another option. You can drive to the Blue Lagoon, but driving in Vanuatu can be tricky as one they drive on the right-hand side of the road and two some of the roads are unpaved or less maintained with potholes to dodge.

Taxi

You can also hire a taxi to take you to the Blue Lagoon. Negotiate the fare with the driver beforehand and ask them to stick around to take you back to Port Vila. Expect to pay similar rates to taxis in Australia, they aren’t cheap.

The journey from Port Vila to the Blue Lagoon takes around 30 to 45 minutes by car.

Once you get there get your camera ready and prepare to be amazed and the stunning turquoise swimming hole.

Remember to check the opening hours and bring some cash for the entrance fee (500 vatu).

Consider joining a guided tour if you prefer a hassle-free experience with additional information about the area’s natural wonders and cultural significance.
