So, fasten your seatbelts and join us on this introspective journey, where we’ll debunk myths, separate facts from fiction, and unveil the real Bali that awaits eager travellers seeking an unforgettable experience.
Is Bali Overrated?
Ah, the million-dollar question: Is Bali overrated? Bali has definitely been hyped up as a dreamy paradise with stunning landscapes, cultural richness, and all-around good vibes. And let’s be real, it’s got a lot to offer!
But, like any popular destination, Bali does have its downsides. During peak seasons, touristy spots can get crazily crowded, and traffic jams might just test your patience. Plus, the whole influencer craze has flooded social media with those picture-perfect shots, making some places feel less authentic.
And Bali is hot! So prepare to sweat! Personally, I found it a bit too hot so going away but the pool or the beach is quite a mission! It does make the cheap beer taste better at the end of the day though!
And it seems the number of travellers to Bali that fall victim to Bali’s belly is on the rise, talk about a spoilt holiday! On my trip, my family and I were pretty lucky to avoid getting sick, although when we got back home we all felt a bit off in the stomach.
Nothing some antibiotics and probiotics can’t cure though.
But hold on a second! Don’t write it off just yet. The lush scenery, beautiful temples, and friendly locals make it a unique and captivating destination. And you know what? It’s totally possible to escape the crowds and find hidden gems off the beaten path.
So, is Bali overrated? Well, that depends on how you look at it. If you’re prepared to embrace both the enchanting and sometimes chaotic sides of the island, you’ll likely have a blast.

Is Bali Worth Visiting? The Cons
Just like any travel destination, Bali is not without its drawbacks.
For us to unpack is Bali overrated we need to go through the cons.
Before you pack your bags and embark on your Balinese adventure, it’s essential to consider some of the cons that might impact your experience. Let’s delve into the aspects that may challenge your trip to this highly-hyped destination.
Traffic Is Bad
Bali’s roads, especially in busy tourist areas, can be notorious for heavy traffic and congestion. Navigating through crowded streets may result in longer travel times and a bit of frustration.
And not to mention the amount of people travelling on mopeds makes it feel ten times more chaotic. And they don’t really stick to the road rules..
Scams
Like many tourist hotspots, Bali has its share of scams and touts looking to take advantage of unsuspecting travellers. Be cautious when dealing with street vendors or arranging tours with unknown operators.
Too Touristy
Bali’s immense popularity has led to issues of over-tourism in certain regions, particularly during peak seasons. This can lead to crowded beaches, congested attractions, and a loss of the island’s serene charm.
Too Many Influencers
The rise of social media influencers has put Bali in the spotlight, attracting hordes of travellers seeking picture-perfect shots for their feeds.
Some areas might feel less authentic due to the influx of influencers and staged photoshoots.
It’s Very Hot and Humid
Bali’s tropical climate means hot and humid weather year-round, which can make for an uncomfortably sweaty trip.
Pollution and Noise
Rapid development and a growing population have contributed to issues of pollution and noise, particularly in heavily urbanized areas.
Bali also isn’t the cleanest place. It can be dirty and grotty.
You Can Get Bali Belly
Bali belly, the dreaded traveller’s diarrhea, should be a concern for all travellers. It’s essential to be cautious with food and water choices to avoid stomach issues.
This can make eating and drinking out in Bali more challenging as you need to watch where you eat and what you eat.
You Can’t Drink The Water
Bali’s tap water is not drinkable, so you need to stick to bottled or filtered water. This can be a big inconvenience for those used to drinking tap water.
Where to Stay In Bali
Is Bali overrated? I’ll tell you right now Bali accommodations and villas are certainly not overhyped!
The island offers many hotels and resorts that cater to various budgets and preferences. Whether you’re looking for a lavish five-star experience or a cozy boutique hotel, Bali has it all.
Upscale beachfront resorts in areas like Nusa Dua and Seminyak offer world-class amenities, stunning ocean views, and exceptional service. These resorts often feature luxurious spas, infinity pools, and multiple dining options for a completely indulgent experience.
For those seeking a more private and intimate stay, Bali’s villas are a popular choice. Villas offer spacious and well-appointed accommodations with amenities like private pools, gardens, and fully equipped kitchens.

Overrated Places To Stay In Bali
Let’s now chat about those spots that I find very overrated and wouldn’t recommend you stay in!
1. Kuta: Polluted & Overcrowded Party Hub
Alright, let’s address the elephant in the room – Kuta.
Known for its nightlife, but truth be told, it’s polluted, and overpriced with mediocre food and shopping.
The crowded streets are a bit much if you’re seeking that tranquil Balinese vibe.
Plus, the beaches are nothing to rave about particularly when it’s covered in trash and partygoers.
In my opinion, there are much better spots to stay in Bali and I would advise you to steer clear of Kuta.
2. Tanah Lot: Sunset Hype
Tanah Lot, oh Tanah Lot!
Now, don’t get me wrong, the temple perched on the rock is breathtaking.
But here’s the tea – the sunset view has become a bit of a spectacle. The crowds flock for that Instagram-worthy shot, and it can feel more like a paparazzi meetup than a serene sunset moment.
If you’re craving a quieter spiritual experience, Bali has temples aplenty that offer tranquillity without the tourist frenzy.
3. Legian: Trading Chill for Chaos
Legian, Legian, Legian – it’s like Kuta’s cousin who’s trying a bit too hard to keep up.
Sure, it’s got some happening spots, but the relentless nightlife and commercial vibe might not be everyone’s cup of Bali coffee.
If you’re dreaming of a more authentic Balinese experience, exploring the quieter towns and villages might be the key. Think rice terraces, traditional ceremonies, and a slower pace that lets you savour every moment.
Where To Go Outside Of Bali
So, you’re not entirely sold on the whole Bali adventure – no worries, we’ve got some off-the-beaten-path gems that might just steal your heart!
Let’s chat about where to go outside of Bali.
1. Gili Islands: Tropical Paradise
Now, if Bali’s bustling vibe isn’t your jam, hop on over to the Gili Islands – a trio of tiny tropical wonders just off the coast of Lombok.
Think pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and a vibe that’s more laid-back paradise than a crowded hotspot.
Whether you fancy snorkelling with sea turtles, cycling through car-free lanes, or just lazing in a hammock with a coconut in hand, the Gilis have that dreamy island charm that’s pure magic.
2. Lombok: Bali’s Chill Neighbor
Ever met a chill neighbour who’s got all the good vibes? That’s Lombok for you!
It’s like the quieter, less-frequented sibling of Bali, and boy, does it have its own set of charms.
Think lush landscapes, cascading waterfalls, and a more tranquil pace. You can hike Mount Rinjani, explore traditional Sasak villages, or just unwind on the pristine Selong Belanak Beach.
Lombok’s like that hidden gem waiting to be discovered – a perfect escape for those craving a bit of serenity.
3. Raja Ampat: Underwater Wonderland
Now, if you’re up for an adventure beyond Bali’s shores, Raja Ampat is your ticket to an underwater paradise.
This remote archipelago in West Papua is a diver’s dream, with vibrant coral reefs, teeming marine life, and that unbeatable feeling of exploring the untouched.
It’s like finding Nemo, but in real life!
While it may take a bit more effort to get there, the jaw-dropping beauty beneath the waves makes Raja Ampat a must-visit for those seeking a truly unique and unspoiled experience.
