Alternatives to Uber include mopeds and taxis

Is there Uber in Bali?

As of 2024, Uber is not available in Bali.

In 2018, Uber merged with Grab, a Southeast Asian ride-hailing company, which now operates in Bali.

But don’t worry, you’ll get the hang of Grab just as you did with Uber!

While Uber is not available in Bali, there are several alternatives including Grab, Gojeck, taxis, hiring private drivers or renting a car to get around the island.

You have plenty of options, so let’s unpack them!

Grab in Bali

➡️ Download the Grab App here

Starting off with Grab, the equivalent of Uber in Bali.

To use Grab in Bali, simply download the Grab app, register an account, and start booking your rides.

As with Uber, the app provides upfront pricing, allowing you to see the fare before confirming your ride, meaning no scam fares or negotiation! You can choose to pay using cash or card.

Grab also offers food delivery, just like Uber Eats!

Given the evolving nature of ride-sharing, I suggest checking for any updates or changes closer to your travel dates.

Gojeck in Bali

➡️ Download the Gojeck app here

Gojek is another dependable choice for getting around the streets of Bali.

Using Gojek is also a straightforward process – a quick download of the app, a hassle-free registration, and you’re ready to start booking rides.

Much like Grab, Gojek ensures clarity in pricing with upfront fare details, eradicating any uncertainties or negotiations.

This transparent approach allows you to confirm your ride with confidence, free from concerns about unexpected fare price hikes.

Beyond transport, Gojek includes food delivery and package delivery, but it is mostly known for its motorbike taxis.

You can pay for Gojeck services through either cash or credit card in a safe and secure environment.

Is Gojek or Grab Better In Bali?

As we now know there is no Uber in Bali, but instead Gojeck and Grab but you may be wondering which one is better.

Both Grab and Gojek have similar features and coverage areas in Bali, but generally speaking, Grab offers more drivers and greater ride availability especially during peak hours, whereas Gojek often has slightly cheaper prices.

I recommend having both apps installed on your phone to compare prices and availability.

Some people prefer one service over the other based on their own experiences with drivers, wait times and fares, so it’s worth trying both to see which one suits your needs and preferences best.

Is Grab expensive in Bali? How much to ride from the airport

The cost of using Grab in Bali is generally considered reasonable, offering a cost-effective alternative to traditional taxis.

However, specific pricing can vary depending on factors such as the distance traveled, time of day, and demand.

Below are some rates I grabbed directly from Grab to give you estimates on rides from the Denpasar Ngurah Rai International Airport to some popular areas in Bali.

DestinationGrab Ride Price (IDR)Grab Ride Price (USD)
Kuta115,00 – 175,000$7.5 – $12
Seminyak175,000 – 300,000$12 – $20
Sanur225,000 – 350,000$14 – $23
Uluwatu285,000 – 400,000$18 – $26
Canguu250,000 – 400,000$16 – $26
Ubud450,000 – 550,000$29 – $35

Keep in mind, that rates are subject to change based on local conditions and policies.

You can also expect Gojeck to offer similar or slightly cheaper rates.

Tip! Pre-book your private transfer from Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali on Klook for a smooth and cost-effective trip. It’s cheaper than Grab and the driver will be waiting for you when you arrive!

Alternatives to Ride-Sharing in Bali

Grab and Gojeck aren’t the only options for getting around in Bali, let’s now cover the other options including taking a taxi, hiring a driver and renting a car.

Taking Taxis in Bali

blue bird taxi's in bali are the best alternatives to uber in Bali

Taking taxis in Bali is a common and convenient way to get around the island.

Bluebird is a well-known and reputable taxi company in Bali. You can easily spot their blue-coloured taxis with the Bluebird logo. The drivers also wear blue shirts with little birds on them.

Bluebird taxis are known for their reliability, use of meters, and professional drivers. They are generally considered a safe option for getting around. I personally would only recommend Bluebird when taking taxis in Bali.

To catch a Bluebird, you can hail them on the street in popular tourist areas or find them at designated taxi stands.

If for whatever reason, a meter is not available when you get into a taxi, make sure to negotiate and agree on a price upfront

Are Taxis Safe in Bali?

Taxis in Bali are generally safe.

But, as with any destination, it’s essential to take certain precautions to ensure a safe and enjoyable journey.

I always suggest sticking to reputable taxi companies, aka Bluebird, known for it’s top-notch safety standards.

When getting into a taxi ensure that the driver is a licensed professional. Official taxis in Bali should display their driver’s ID card and taxi permit.

In addition, reputable taxi companies in Bali, such as Bluebird, use meters to calculate fares based on distance and time. This helps ensure transparency and avoid any potential issues.

Like in any destination, it’s important to stay alert and aware of your surroundings when taking a taxi. Keep your belongings secure and be cautious of any suspicious behaviour or unfamiliar routes.

Clearly communicate your destination to the driver and ensure they understand your intended route. It can be helpful to have the address written down or use landmarks to guide the driver.

If possible, travel with others, especially during nighttime or in less populated areas and have emergency numbers, saved on your phone.

If you have any concerns or run into any issues during your ride, report them to the taxi company and local authorities.

Are Taxis Cheap In Bali?

Taxis in Bali are generally pretty cheap compared to many other tourist destinations.

gojek or grab in bali are great alternatives to uber in Bali. Order a rideshare via the app

That being said, the cost of taxis does vary by distance, time of day, traffic conditions, and the taxi company you choose.

By sticking to Bluebird Taxis with metered fares you can guarantee an affordable and fair price.

It’s good to note that Bali’s traffic can be congested, especially in popular tourist areas and during peak hours. This can affect the overall cost of your taxi ride, as the meter keeps running even when the car is stationary. An upfront fare on a ride-sharing app can avoid this issue.

It’s also a good idea to familiarize yourself with the local currency and have some small notes or coins available for payment, as drivers may not always have change for larger bills.

If you’re looking to save on transport costs, consider exploring other options like renting a scooter or using public transport for shorter trips.

Additionally, joining shared transportation services or hiring a private driver for a full-day excursion can sometimes be more cost-effective for groups or visiting multiple destinations in a single day.

Hiring A Private Driver In Bali

Hiring a driver in uber can be a great way to get around including to the stunning Canggu

Hiring a private driver in Bali can be a great way to simplify your trip and make your time there even more enjoyable.

Whether you’re looking for an experienced driver to take you sightseeing on your own schedule or you prefer to have someone to take care of all your transport needs, having a private driver can be one of the best ways to get around Bali.

With an experienced driver familiar with all the hot spots and landmarks of Bali, you can be sure you won’t miss out on anything. Plus, you won’t have to worry about getting lost or trying to navigate the chaotic roads!

Many villas and resorts offer private driver services so I would start there. We hired a driver for a day trip to the beach and it was perfect.

Renting a Car in Bali

If you’re wanting to rent a car in Bali, there are lots of reputable car rental companies to choose from.

You can easily find a great deal on a car that suits your needs and budget.

Be sure to choose a car rental company with a good reputation, I always recommend Discovercars.

But, as a word of warning, driving in Bali is not for the faint-hearted, it can be incredibly chaotic and hard to navigate so I personally wouldn’t recommend it!

There are mopeds and motorbikes everywhere, weaving in between traffic. The road rules are not as strict as they are in other places around the world.

If you do rent a car, make sure to find out what the company’s insurance plans are so you don’t get stuck with an unexpected bill if your car is damaged or stolen, plus I always suggest travel insurance for additional cover!

A Quick Guide To Driving In Bali

The roads in Bali are filled with mopeds and motorcycles which makes driving difficult

Below are a few quick tips for driving in Bali.

  • Make sure that you always have a valid international driver’s license when you’re driving in Bali.
  • Familiarize yourself with the rules of the roads, not that they are heavily followed anyway!
  • Be prepared for the heavy traffic in Bali. Traffic is especially bad during peak hours and around tourist attractions.
  • Watch out for potholes, which are a common problem on the roads in Bali.
  • Never drink and drive.
  • Be wary of drivers who try to overtake from the wrong side of the road, and don’t follow their example.
  • Drive on the left side of the road.
  • Make sure you have the necessary travel insurance in case of emergency.

Renting a Scooter in Bali

Picture this: wind in your hair, sun-kissed roads, and the freedom to explore every nook and cranny at your own pace.

Renting a scooter in Bali isn’t just about getting from point A to B; it’s an immersive experience in itself.

From riding through bustling markets to winding coastal roads, it’s your ticket to uncharted exploration.

The process is as easy as – simply find a nearby rental company (they are just about everywhere), pop on your helmet and you’re off!

The cost of renting a scooter in Bali is around IDR 70,000 ($5) per day. You can negotiate a better deal if you rent for a longer period.

❗To rent a scooter in Bali you will need an international driver’s permit

Public Buses in Bali

Opting for public buses is an excellent and budget-friendly way to get around Bali, allowing you to immerse yourself in the local culture while exploring the island.

Choosing buses over Grab or GoJek can be a cost-effective decision, providing even more of a pocket-friendly alternative to reach your destination.

However, it’s essential to note that punctuality might not be the bus’s strong suit, so bear this in mind, especially if you’re on a tight itinerary!

There are a few bus companies to choose from including the stand-out Bemo, Kura-Kura, Trans Sarbagita, and Trans Metro Dewata each offering different routes.

One-way bus tickets start at around IDR 5000-7000 IDR ($0.3 – $0.5 USD) to 100,000 ($6.50).

Is there Uber eats in Bali?

Since there is no Uber in Bali, Uber Eats is also not available in Bali.

But don’t worry you can get food delivered to you in a pinch with other food delivery platforms, such as GrabFood and GoFood!

These platforms are popular for locals and travellers alike, providing a convenient way to explore and savour the diverse culinary scene of Bali from the comfort of your own villa.

Uber in Bali FAQ’s!

Beautiful Canggu Bali sunset

Let’s cover the most frequently asked questions about getting around Bali!

Is Grab expensive in Bali?

Grab, is generally considered affordable in Bali compared to taxis. The pricing for Grab rides in Bali is relatively competitive and often cheaper than negotiating fares with regular taxis.

However, it’s important to keep in mind that prices may vary depending on factors such as distance, time of day, and demand.

During peak hours or in high-demand tourist areas, Grab prices may slightly increase due to surge pricing. I recommend checking the app for fare estimates before booking a ride and being aware of any surge pricing notifications.

Grab also offers different options, such as motorbikes, which can affect the pricing. Motorbike rides are usually cheaper compared to car rides.

What is the easiest way to get around Bali?

One of the easiest ways to get around Bali is by hiring a private driver or using transportation apps like Grab or Gojek.

Hiring a private driver is a popular and convenient option for exploring Bali. You can hire a driver for a full day or specific trips, and they can take you to various attractions, temples, beaches, and other destinations. Having a local driver who knows the roads well can save you time and make navigation easier.

Alternatively, Grab and Gojek are great to get around with affordable prices and great availability.

Which cab service is best in Bali?

In Bali, the most reputable and reliable taxi service is Bluebird.

Bluebird is a well-established taxi company with a solid reputation for providing safe and reliable transport.

Bluebird taxis are known for their professional drivers who prioritize passenger safety. The drivers undergo thorough training and are known to follow traffic rules and regulations. The cars are well-maintained and have meters, so you can ensure a fair fare.

You can easily spot Bluebird taxis with their signature light blue colour and bird logo.

It’s worth noting that while Bluebird is a reliable taxi service, there have been reports of other taxis in Bali imitating their branding or using similar names to confuse passengers. To ensure you are using an official Bluebird taxi, look for the Bluebird logo on the vehicle and match the taxi number with the one provided on the driver’s identification card.

Tip

Ordering a Bluebird taxi through the Grab app is also a convenient option, as it combines the reliability of Bluebird with the convenience of ride-hailing services!

Conclusion: Is there Uber in Bali?

In conclusion, Uber is not available in Bali, although that may change in the near future.

For now, taxis, ride-share apps Grab and Gojek, renting a car or hiring a driver are the only means of getting around the island.

If you are catching a taxi, stick to Bluebird as they are the most reputable service and have metered fares.

I personally don’t recommend renting a car as the roads are difficult to navigate and can be dangerous if you aren’t used to the conditions. Instead, hire a private driver for the day as they will have more experience driving the roads and will be able to provide local insights and suggestions on the best places to visit.

As always, it’s important to do your own research and keep updated on any changes in the service available when planning your trip to Bali.
