Bali is a stunning tropical paradise that attracts millions of tourists every year. However, have you considered exploring other places like Bali that have fewer tourists yet still offer exceptional beaches, culture, and food and can be traveled on a tight budget? 

Bali is one of the cheapest tropical destinations that offers exceptional value. I’m talking stunning villas, great food, cocktails, and fun activities all at an affordable price. Because of this, it does experience mass tourism which can mean cultural dilution and more crowds.

I liked Bali but I didn’t love it. Personally, I think there are much better tropical destinations that are a little more off the beaten path with fewer tourists and just as many amazing things to do.

Whether you’ve already explored Bali and are looking for a similar destination or perhaps you’re looking for a taste of Bali without the concerns about “Bali belly” or overcrowded tourist hotspots, these 21 best places like Bali will do just the trick.

1. Vanuatu

Looking for a Bali-like getaway but with a twist? Enter Vanuatu, a South Pacific gem with 83 stunning islands just waiting to be explored.

Picture yourself stepping onto an active volcano, wandering through rainforests, and surrounded by waters so clear you’ll want to dive right in.

Vanuatu’s got all the hallmarks of a tropical paradise, just like Bali. You can laze on beautiful beaches, explore blue caves, visit the markets, dive into bright blue holes, take incredible tours, and immerse yourself in the vibrant cultural experiences that will leave you with a fresh new perspective.

However, Vanuatu is more expensive than Bali, I found the prices to be similar to Australian prices.

That being said, with its warm hospitality and untouched beauty, Vanuatu offers that Bali vibe with its own unique flair – well worth the visit!

Bali on the other hand is more developed, with more restaurants, shopping, and nightlife options so in my opinion you will get a more authentic travel experience in Palawan. Both destinations offer great diving, snorkeling, and other water activities, as well as cultural and adventure experiences.

When visiting Palawan you must check out the many natural wonders, but in particular, the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

14. Costa Rica

In terms of food, Costa Rica will probably appeal more to people who don‘t love to step too far outside of their culinary preferences and would rather stick to American and European food.

The beautiful islands have as much space as Western Europe, but only 15,000 residents, the Cook Islands give you that rare and wonderful feeling of being distanced from the world. 

Escape the thralls of the 9 to 5 with bright blue water, refreshing lagoons, true South Pacific culture, and diverse tropical wilderness.

Head out deep sea fishing, go mountain biking, lay by some of the best beaches in the world, and at night, treat yourself to a dinner on the water’s edge or perhaps a couple of cocktails.

Similar to Bali you shouldn’t need to lift a finger if all you want is to relax on the soft white beaches, taking in the ever-changing surroundings with a cocktail in hand. 

Both destinations are popular among tourists looking for a relaxing holiday with plenty of water sports and outdoor activities. 

Both locations feature vibrant local cultures, with traditional music and dance, and interesting local cuisines.

However, the Cook Islands are much less developed than Bali, with fewer restaurants and nightlife, and less tourist infrastructure. Plus it’s more expensive.
