👮 Safety: Very safe for solo travellers
Travel luxuriously for an affordable price through a beautiful setting! The value in Bali is truly insane! Expect a blend of beautiful luxurious villas, nature, epic day trips and nightlife, it’s one of the most popular budget-friendly places for 20-somethings.
When I travelled to Bali I stayed in Seminyak, home to lavish accommodations, high-end restaurants, and beach clubs all at an affordable price! Be warned though, Bali is incredibly hot & humid in the summertime so be prepared to sweat or… spend the day sipping cocktails by the pool!
Curious if Bali is overrated? Read my honest opinion here.
Make sure to watch the sunset on the beach or book a dinner reservation on the beach to see the sky turn to candy, shades of pink, orange and purple! I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more beautiful sunset than in Bali.
Before you go make sure to visit your Travel Doctor to ensure you have received the appropriate vaccinations and are prepared with some Bali belly medications should it strike. Also, ensure you read up on how you can best protect yourself whilst eating and drinking on the Island.
Safety in Bali
Bali is home to friendly locals, great hostels, and like-minded travellers, making it a safe place for female solo travellers. Bali attracts loads of visitors and there have been cases of petty crime such as bag snatching, particularly around tourist attractions.
As always take care walking around at night, avoid drinking an excessive amount and keep an eye on your drinks.
Tip: Ask for drinks without ice and stick to bottled water or bottled beers, which are dirt cheap by the way!
Where To Stay In Bali
Below are my top picks for solo travellers in Bali.
✔️Tab Hotel Legian Bali
Excellent budget hostel in Seminyak just a quick walk to the beach. Choose from a private room or a capsule dorm bed and enjoy a free breakfast before venturing out for the day. The team are always willing to help you out and there is a pretty social vibe which is great for meeting other travellers.
✔️CR Tris Rooms Seminyak
This is a great budget option for solo travellers who prefer a little more space. Enjoy air-conditioned rooms, a shared kitchen and free Wi-Fi. It’s a no-frills stay that is comfortable and affordable!
✔️Tonys Villas & Resort Seminyak – Bali
Enjoy an outdoor pool, spa treatments, comfortable villas and tour assistance. Dining options include local and international cuisine at the on-site restaurant and beverages at the lounge or pool bar. With its central location, Tonys Villas & Resort is a short drive from Seminyak’s shopping and dining district and Ngurah Rai International Airport.

Best Time To Visit Bali

6. Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
🍝 Food: $3-8 per meal (dining at hawker centres or street vendors)
🏨 Accommodation: $15-35 per night (guesthouses or budget hotels)
🚌 Transport: $1-10 per journey (public buses or Grab rides)
👮 Safety: Safe for solo travellers
Kuala Lumpur is another one of the most affordable and safe destinations for solo travellers. A glitzy skyscraper city combined with a sultry tropical feel, it’s a capital worth exploring!
Spend time soaking in the city’s architecture, diverse culture, gleaming skyscraper towns with epic views, traditional temples and mosques, mega malls, and landmarks.
The retail scene is second to none, if you’re a fashionista add the following malls to your list: Pavilion, Mid-Valley Megamall, Starhill Gallery, and the artsy Publika. Plus most of these mega-malls have food halls with suburb (and affordable) cuisine to try.
To soak up the local ambience head to Chinatown and Bukit Bintang and experience the food stalls.
An absolute must on your trip to Kuala Lumpur is visiting the Batu caves. These limestone caves sit at the top of steep colourful steps housing Hindu temples & shrines, plus a huge statue.
And of course, a trip to Kuala Lumpur is not complete until you see a few of the oldest and largest temples – Tour Thean Hou Temple, the Sri Mahamariaman Hindu Temple, and Masjid Negara National Mosque.
Safety in Kuala Lumpur
In Kuala Lumpur, violent crimes against tourists are very uncommon. But petty crimes do occur. In crowded places and on public transport, beware of pickpockets and pay attention to your surroundings. Pickpocketers do tend to target tourists and solo female travellers so protect your bag and avoid dressing in flashy accessories etc.
Additionally, it’s essential to recognize that Malaysia, grapples with issues of racism and discrimination. While overt acts of racism may not always be prevalent, subtle forms of discrimination based on race, ethnicity, or nationality can occur.
Where To Stay In Kuala Lumpur
Check out where I recommend you stay in Kuala Lumpur on a budget.
✔️ 1000 Miles (Thousand Miles)
What I love about this hostel, is the small dorm rooms with a maximum of 4 people and the range of private ensuites at affordable prices. Plus the dorm rooms have curtains which is a must for me! Located in a central location, it’s a great place to set up base and go and explore the city!
✔️ Space Hotel @ Chinatown Kuala Lumpur
Calling all space lovers! This hostel is one-of-a-kind. Sleep in a modern capsule bed that offers maximal privacy, a charging point, LED lights, a mirror and great ventilation.

A fantastic hostel that is social yet comfortable. As per the name, there is no shortage of hostel-run activities to help you mingle with other guests. Stay in a single bedroom or opt for a 3-bed female dorm. Plus the hostel is located in the heart of Chinatown Kuala Lumpur, surrounded by affordable local food stalls, Chinatown night market and shopping malls.
✔️ Expressionz Suites By iHost Global
Let’s talk about value for money! Expressionz Suites is your entry ticket to luxury without the price tag! Rooms start from $70 per night, but you get so much more than the room itself. Free Wi-Fi, a rooftop pool with skyline views, and access to a sauna and hot tub.
✔️ Ahyu Hotel
Ahyu is a small upgrade from a private hostel room. With rooms starting from $30 per night, come home from your day of travels to a comfortable bed in an air-conditioned room with a private bathroom.
Best Time to Visit Kuala Lumpur
Although Kuala Lumpur experiences a moderate climate year-round, the best months to visit are December to January and June to August due to the popular festivals during this time. February to March and September to October are considered off-season, so prices tend to drop.
Things To Do In Kuala Lumpur
- Visit the iconic Petronas Twin Towers and stroll along the KLCC Park
- Explore the neighbourhoods of Chinatown and Little India
- Go on a shopping spree
- Eat Malaysian food at Jalan Alor and Petaling Street, sampling local delicacies like nasi lemak and roti canai
- Explore the Batu Caves just outside Kuala Lumpur
7. Hanoi, Vietnam
One of the cheapest and safest places to travel alone is Hanoi. With centuries-old architecture, beautiful lakes, and tranquil Buddhist pagodas, there is no shortage of things to see in Hanoi. Although Hanoi is rapidly developing with shopping malls and luxury hotels cropping up, the downtown area still retains the traditional culture.
Expect Hanoi to be loud and chaotic with motorbikes zipping around the streets with little order. When visiting Hanoi, it’s best just to get lost in the vibrant streets and alleyways to take in the day-to-day life of locals. I recommend you stroll around the French colonial Old Quarter, visit the outdoor markets, try local food from the street food vendor, and have a cup of Vietnamese coffee.
Known as the “City of Lakes”, Hanoi is home to over two dozen lakes that are beautiful to stroll by. Then pop down to the now-popular tourist spot to take a photo on the train tracks on Train Street. It’s pretty fascinating how a train can operate in such a tight alleyway!
And of course, you have to eat all the food! Start with a food tour and indulge in some of the best Vietnamese food you get your hands on. Continue on your foodie expedition by taking a cooking class. What better souvenir than a traditional recipe to share with friends and family?
Safety in Hanoi
Vietnam is a safe country for solo female travellers. Its popularity as a backpackers haven in South East Asia itself is a testament to this fact. Small petty crimes do occasionally occur but experiencing any serious danger is uncommon.
However, it’s essential to be aware of common scams, such as taxi scams, overcharging at tourist sites, and fake tour operators to keep your wallet intact.
Where To Stay In Hanoi
Moving onto my recommended stays in Hanoi for those on a tighter budget.
✔️ Hanoi House Hostel & Travel
My personal pick when staying in Hanoi. From $50 score a private ensuite room in the ideal location of Hanoi Old Quarter. A peaceful spot to see top attractions, and explore the culture, and history of Hanoi.
✔️ Hanoi Buffalo Hostel
A modern hostel with private ensuites, and female or mixed dorms available, perfect for every budget! Book a private room for $45 or opt for a dorm bed from as low as $10 per night! And here’s the best part there is free breakfast, walking tours and…beer! Plus you can cool down in the hostel’s pool, a great place to meet other travellers.
✔️ Hanoi Emerald Waters Hotel Valley
A great location, delicious breakfast included, airport transfers, free Wi-FI and gorgeous rooms that offer superior comfort. What more could you want!
✔️ Hotel Emerald Waters Classy
Upgrade from a hostel for a small additional cost and receive loads more value for money. Located in the heart of Hanoi, the hotel offers a restaurant and bar onsite, breakfast for an additional $2 per night and a spa to relax in.
Things To Do In Hanoi
- Explore the Old Quarter’s vibrant streets
- Visit Hoan Kiem Lake and Ngoc Son Temple
- Take a Photo at Train Street
- Sample street food specialties in the Old Quarter
- Take a Cooking Class
Best Time To Visit Hanoi
The best time to visit Hanoi is from February to April and from Late September to November. Temperatures are not at their hottest and you can skip monsoon season.
8. Cairns, Australia
Head up to North Queensland to experience one of the world’s seven wonders. The Great Barrier Reef is one of the most remarkable natural wonders that, unfortunately, may not be around and as exquisite for too much longer.
Hop on a snorkelling or scuba diving tour from Cairns to The Great Barrier Reef and dive into the magical waters and explore the underwater world, it’s a bucket list adventure that is non-negotiable!
Cairns is not just the gateway to The Great Barrier Reef but is also known for its natural waterfalls, beaches, rainforests, crocodiles and wildlife. Enjoy the laid-back outdoor lifestyle that involves waterfall hopping, catching and cooking fresh fish from the reef and exploring the Australian history that remains.
Be careful when swimming in Cairns beaches as crocodiles have been spotted in the water all year round! Pay attention to signage at beaches, waterholes and rivers, they will tell you whether it is safe or not to swim.
Although Australia as a whole isn’t the cheapest country to travel to, Cairns is one of the more affordable options that will give you a glimpse of the Aussie culture, animals, beaches and beautiful landmarks. And it is just so safe that I couldn’t leave it off the list!
Safety in Cairns
Speaking as an Aussie who has grown up here, Australia is an incredibly safe country for female solo travellers. For the most part, Aussies are good people who will say G’day when they see you walking down the street and will be happy to assist if you’re lost.
But don’t get too comfortable and accept a false sense of security in Australia. Anything can happen, and it’s best to remain conscious of your surroundings at all times.

- Explore the Great Barrier Reef
- Visit the Daintree Rainforest
- Ride the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway
- Relax on Cairns’ beaches
- Go Waterfall Hopping – Barron Falls, Stoney Creek Falls & Josephine Falls etc.
Best Time To Visit Cairns
The best time to visit the Great Barrier Reef and Cairns is during the dry season, which runs from May to October. During this time, the weather is generally sunny with low humidity, making it perfect for exploring the reef. This period also coincides with the migration of humpback whales, offering excellent opportunities for whale watching.
But of course, this is also peak tourist time so make sure to book well in advance to avoid price hikes!
